Virtual workshop and training on "Collecting and managing information and data on coconut germplasm", 20 & 21 August 2024 for the project "Safeguarding threatened coconut diversity within the upgraded International Coconut Genebank for the South Pacific"

Objective

To identify the critical data that needs to be collected and stored by farmers, extension officers and genebank curators for supplying quality seednuts through on-farm selection and breeding with the introduction of new tools to enhance characterisation.

For Whom?

Anyone directly involved with collecting, managing, storing, retrieving, and/or analysing coconut germplasm data, including those concerned with monitoring and maintaining coconut genebanks. We will also invite in situ diversity stakeholders such as growers and extension workers. In the context of the FAO benefit-sharing fund (BSF) project, this focuses on nominated trainees from Fiji, PNG, and Samoa, but the course will be offered to relevant, nominated participants from any SPC and/or COGENT member country which hosts a genebank, especially the International Genebanks (in Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire, India, and Indonesia, as well as PNG).

Remarks

As part of the project FAO BSF4 PR363: Safeguarding threatened coconut germplasm in the upgraded international Coconut Genebank for the South Pacific (ICG-SP). This project aims to conserve threatened coconut germplasm in the ICG-SP with duplication in Fiji and Samoa. The virtual workshop is hosted by the Pacific Community (SPC) in collaboration with the International Coconut Genetic Resources Network (COGENT).It is a follow-up and consolidation of the training held on-site in Fiji and PNG in 2023.

Please also note that this training is focused on contextualizing germplasm data and information management in terms of approaches to characterisation and coconut reproduction and breeding. It is not focused on technical informatics or germplasm information system design. Presentations and videos will be delivered by international experts on diverse topics under the programme.
