So I began to observe these leaning palm trees, with very different eyes. They lean towards the trade winds: the stronger the wind blows, the more the palm tree bends. And it is to this leaning attitude that their charm is due. I saw them swaying in the light wind and you would have sworn dancers. All shades of voluptuous grace passed through their dances; there were some who leaned over a little bit, swayed with a sort of condescension - you could see that they were of good family; others were frankly indulging in pleasure, leaning boldly and swinging in the wind in a way that left no doubt.

The next day we went together to the village church to pray and thank God for the good conclusion of this strange story. We brought the guilty coconut to the priest, so that it could bear witness to our history. The Christians of the Pacific like to use today, as a symbol, the image of the coconut tree and the coconut. No one is able to control the time required for the maturation of a coconut. When it is ripe, it falls. Thus, Jesus Christ comes at the time willed by God. Coconut is like water when it falls, it rolls down to the lowest level, until it reaches the ocean. Jesus came down to earth to associate with the most humble men. When the coconut rolls on the ground, we see the gifts of God rolling with it: drink and food, but also work, collection, sale and income. No part of the tree is discarded; from leaves to roots, everything can be useful. The coconut tree symbolizes true community. The coconut still represents evangelism. Falling to the ground, it produces new life, carried by the ocean to the shore of another island, it brings life there. The coconut has become part of the Eucharist. Bread and wine, the only ones used for a long time for Holy Communion, are made from two different foreign plants. The almond and the local coconut milk, often used now, come from a single plant. Jesus Christ offered his own body and shed his own blood. Smiling, but aware of the importance of daring to express one's faith in one's own way, the Christians of the Pacific call this new language their "coconut tree theology".
