Coco de mer - Coco fesse

For illustrating this section, we can produce on request at least one large size HD poster (up to 180x100 cm in size). This poster should not be adapted to each country because of its spécificity.

Lodoicea, commonly known as the sea coconut, coco de mer, or double coconut, is a monotypic genus in the palm family. The sole species, Lodoicea maldivica, is endemic to the islands of Praslin and Curieuse in the Seychelles. It has the biggest seed in a plant, and this is NOT a coconut! The fruit is bilobed, flattened, 40 to 50 cm long ovoid and pointed, and contains usually one but occasionally two to four seeds.

In 2022, according to the Seychelles National Parks Authority (SNPA), coco de mer nuts are sold at three different prices. There are two different forms; Form A where the nuts are sold at SCR6,000 ($454) and Form B at SCR5,000 ($378). Those that are considered deformed are sold at SCR3,000 ($227).

Normal coconuts have three round indented markings or "eyes"... A rare coconut, previously in Dr R. Bourdeix collection, had five eyes... and a very suggestive shape!
