Leaves – Feuilles

"When the plumes, gently swaying in the wind, move and vibrate, when on each of the leaves is marked a ray of sunshine, while the characteristic sound of the brushing of the leaflets produced by the breeze, the spectacle and the rhythm offered by a vast coconut plantation is very poetic."
Collet, Octave-J.-A.(1913)La noix de coco: études pour une plantation de cocotiers.

The coconut palm is made up of a trunk (or stipe) surmounted by a large crown of leaves. In the axil of each leaf is usually an inflorescence which develops into a coconut laden bunch. The leaf crown has about thirty leaves, gigantic plumes sometimes exceeding six meters in length which rustle in the slightest wind. A single bud produces all the leaves and flowers. This bud works continuously: the coconut tree therefore grows inexorably, until it dies. Although the bud is very protected, its uniqueness gives the tree a certain fragility. When an insect manages to penetrate the heart and devours the bud, the coconut palm is doomed.
In the axil of each leaf usually appears a pointed spathe which grows and often ends up exceeding a meter in length. When fully grown, the spathe splits and releases the inflorescence which includes both female and male flowers. Once the inflorescence opens, the female flowers will take about one year to develop into mature coconuts.

An extremely rare mutation that could have a huge
economic value for use by gardeners and landscapers.

For illustrating this section, we can produce on request at least seven large size HD poster (up to 180x100 cm in size). These posters should be adapted to each country, on a case-by-case basis, in order to prominently feature locally produced coconut products, and to promote the marketing of these local products. It is also possible to buy or rent items from the personal collection of Dr R. Bourdeix.
